This Privacy Policy describes how the Nekhor mobile application ("Nekhor," "we," "us," or "our" or the “app”) collects, uses, and protects information when you use the Nekhor application (the “app”) on iOS or Android devices.

By using the Nekhor mobile application, you agree to the practices described in this Privacy Policy.


1. Who We Are

Nekhor is a sacred pilgrimage and Buddhist education program of Samye, a U.S. 501(c)(3) religious nonprofit organization. The Nekhor mobile application provides information about Buddhist sacred sites, pilgrimage guidance, historical and cultural resources, maps, prayers, teachings, and practice materials in support of Samye's religious and educational mission.

Subscription fees paid through the Nekhor application are payments for access to app content and services and are not tax-deductible charitable contributions.


2. Information We Collect

Account Information

When you create an account, we collect and store your email address and, if you choose, a display name.

If you sign in using Apple or Google, we receive authentication information and the email address associated with your account. We do not receive or store your Apple or Google account password.

Location Information

If you grant permission, Nekhor accesses your device's approximate or precise location to display your position relative to sacred sites and pilgrimage locations within the app.

Location data is used only while the app is in use unless otherwise disclosed. We do not run background location tracking, and we do not store your location history on our servers.

Subscription Information

Subscriptions are processed through Apple App Store or Google Play Billing.

We receive information necessary to verify your subscription status, including purchase tokens and entitlement status, through our subscription management provider, RevenueCat. We do not receive or store payment card information.

  • Device and Diagnostic Information

  • We may collect limited technical information, including:

  • A pseudonymous app user identifier

  • Device type and operating system version

  • Crash reports and diagnostic information

  • App performance and reliability data

We do not use advertising identifiers and do not collect advertising IDs for marketing purposes.


3. How We Use Information

We use information to:

  • Create and manage your account

  • Authenticate your identity and maintain access to the app

  • Provide maps, pilgrimage guidance, and educational content

  • Verify and manage subscription access

  • Maintain app security and prevent misuse

  • Diagnose technical issues and improve app performance

  • Comply with legal obligations

We do not sell personal information.

We do not use personal information for advertising or cross-context behavioral advertising.


4. Religious Content and User Privacy

Nekhor is operated by a religious nonprofit organization.

The sacred sites you view, pilgrimage locations you visit, prayers you access, teachings you study, and practice resources you use within the app are not used to create profiles of your religious beliefs, practices, or affiliations.

Information collected through the app is used solely to provide and improve the app and support our religious and educational mission.


5. Legal Basis for Processing (EEA, UK, and Similar Jurisdictions)

Where applicable, we process personal information on one or more of the following legal bases:

  • Your consent (for example, when you grant location permissions)

  • Performance of a contract (for example, providing account access and subscription services)

  • Legitimate interests (such as maintaining security, preventing fraud, and improving the app)

  • Compliance with legal obligations


6. Third-Party Service Providers

We use trusted third-party service providers to operate the app, including:

  • Apple for Sign in with Apple and App Store subscriptions

  • Google for Google Sign-In, Google Play Billing, and Google Maps services

  • RevenueCat for subscription management and entitlement verification

  • Heroku (Salesforce) for backend hosting and application services

  • Amazon Web Services (AWS) for storage, hosting, and content delivery

These providers process information only as necessary to provide services on our behalf and are subject to their own privacy policies and security practices.


7. Data Retention

We retain personal information only for as long as necessary to provide the app and fulfill the purposes described in this Privacy Policy.

If you delete your account, we will delete or anonymize your personal information within 30 days, unless we are required to retain certain information for legal, tax, accounting, security, or fraud-prevention purposes.


8. Account and Data Deletion

You may request deletion of your account and associated personal information at any time:

  • Through the account deletion feature within the app, if available

  • By emailing info@samyetranslations.org from the email address associated with your account

Subscription cancellations must be managed through the Apple App Store or Google Play Store, as applicable.


9. International Data Transfers

Nekhor is operated from the United States.

If you access the app from outside the United States, your information may be transferred to, stored, and processed in the United States or other countries where our service providers operate.

Where required by applicable law, we take reasonable measures to protect personal information during international transfers.


10. Your Rights

Depending on your location and applicable law, you may have the right to:

  • Access your personal information

  • Correct inaccurate information

  • Request deletion of your information

  • Restrict or object to certain processing

  • Request a copy of your information in a portable format

  • Withdraw consent where processing is based on consent

Such requests are free of charge and will be answered by the Nekhor without undue delay and, in any event, within one month of receipt of the request. Where necessary, taking into account the complexity and number of requests, this period may be extended by up to two further months. In such cases, Nekhor will inform you of the extension and the reasons for the delay within one month of receipt of the request.You may also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local data protection authority.

Where our processing is based on legitimate interests, you may request additional information regarding those interests.


11. Children's Privacy

Nekhor is not directed to children under the age required to consent to data processing under applicable law in their jurisdiction.

We do not knowingly collect personal information from children without appropriate parental consent. If you believe a child has provided personal information to us, please contact us and we will take appropriate steps to remove the information.


12. Security

We use reasonable administrative, technical, and organizational safeguards to protect personal information.

Data transmitted between the app and our servers is encrypted using HTTPS. Access to stored data is restricted to authorized personnel and service providers.

No method of transmission or storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.


13. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time.

If we make material changes, we will update the "Last Updated" date and may provide additional notice within the app where appropriate.

Your continued use of Nekhor after any updates constitutes acceptance of the revised Privacy Policy.
